Students see firsthand how this inclined plane simple machine splits objects to make tasks easier.
Using a series of three wedges and a frame, students complete lessons to understand the mechanical advantage of inclined planes and applied force. First, they insert the smallest wedge into the groove of the frame and observe the amount of effort needed to slide the wedge into place. They record the distance between the two pieces of the frame then repeat with the medium and large wedge. Increase the resistance by adding rubber bands. How did the size of the wedge or the rubber band change the results? Older students measure the angles of each wedge and the angle created when the edge is inserted into the frame. Finally, connect their learnings by asking students to identify wedges in everyday life. How do they help?
Made of moisture-resistant wood, the frame and wedges will stand up to institutional use. Individual includes frame (15”L x 6”W x 2”H), 3 wedges, rubber bands, plastic protractor, and lesson direction that is adaptable to Grades K-4 and 5-8. Class Set includes increased quantities. Wedge is 3 lb. Recommended for Elementary and up.
