Students engage in physics experiments by building pendulums to investigate the effects of mass, amplitude, and other factors on periodicity.

Students take measurements and collect data to determine how different factors affect their device in this pendulum experiment. Students explore how variables such as releasing the pendulum from different points or making the pendulum shorter or longer affect the periodicity.

Standards-aligned lessons guide students through 3 experiments. Balance or scale required; not included. Included instructor manual provides guided calculations, assessment questions, sample data, and complete answer keys. Allow 45 minutes lab time and 45 minutes class time for analysis. Accommodates 36 students. Recommended for High School.

Standards: Aligns with NGSS

Next Generation Science Standards*:

  • MS-PS2-2: Plan and conduct investigations to demonstrate that a force acting on an object can change its speed or direction of motion.
  • MS-PS4-1: Use models to describe how waves are created by a source and how they can be used to transfer information.
  • HS-PS4-1: Use mathematical representations to describe a simple model for waves that includes how the amplitude and frequency of the wave relate to the energy of the wave.
