RulerRacer Building Set
Experiment with energy using the spring of a tape measure to propel a car!
Small groups of students work together to conceptualize and build a car using balsa wood, straws, glue, wheels, and a tape measure during car experiments. Through the Engineering Design Process, students determine the best way to create it and make modifications to make it perform differently. When ready, extend the tape measure a predetermined length and release the car. Time how long it takes the car to go from the starting line to the end of the tape measure. Test several times from the same distance, or change the variables to see how length of the tape measure affects speed. After several trials, students compare their outcomes, discuss force, and relate their findings to Newton's second law of motion. The included lesson direction for grades K-4 and 5-8 details setup instructions, activities by grade level, learning objectives, and teaching suggestions to expand lessons. Car building kit includes enough materials to build 4 cars. Full contents list below. Recommended for Elementary and up.
