PunnettPuzzle Set
Aspiring geneticists predict inheritance of traits using hands-on manipulatives.
Determine the chance of offspring inheriting certain traits based on their parents’ genotypes using the Punnett square. Start by discussing examples of inherited traits and demonstrate how to set up the Punnett square using two parent genotypes. Then have students arrange double-sided beanbags on the vinyl mat to provide a visual representation of trait probability. Students use their findings to calculate the odds of offspring inheriting the trait in question.
Durable, vinyl mat features the standard 2 x 2 Punnett square setup. Double-sided beanbags include capital and lowercase case letters (12 green A/a; 12 blue B/b) to represent dominant and recessive alleles. Having beanbags with different colors and letters provides opportunities for more complex analysis.
Kit includes 1 vinyl mat (18”L x 18”W), 24 cotton beanbags (3”L x 2”W), and lesson direction. Accommodates 1 student. Group Set includes 4 Individual Sets. Accommodates 4 students. Recommended for Middle School and up.
