Students discover that light and sound are made of invisible waves!

Elementary students interact with light and sound waves almost constantly, but these scientific phenomena are more interesting than what meets the eye! During exciting hands-on light and sound experiments, young learners examine how light travels, refracts, and reflects. They'll learn how wavelength affects visible color and compare relationships between volume, pitch, and vibration of sound. After learning the basics, allow students to make their own light-directing system and create original music! Kit accommodates a full class (approximately 24 students) working in small groups. See full contents list below. Meets NGSS Standards. Recommended for Lower Elementary.

Meets National Standards for Grades 2-4. Addresses NGSS 1-PS4-1, 1-PS4-2, 1-PS4-3. 1-PS4-4, and K-2-ETS1 Engineering Design Standards.

Next Generation Science Standards*:

  • K-PS3-1: Make observations to determine the effect of sunlight on Earth’s surface (e.g., sand, soil, rocks, water) using relative measures such as warmer/cooler.
  • K-PS3-2: Use tools and materials to design and build structures that minimize the warming effect of sunlight, such as umbrellas or tents.
  • 1-PS4-1: Plan and conduct investigations to provide evidence that vibrating materials produce sound and sound can make materials vibrate.
  • 1-PS4-2: Make observations to construct evidence-based accounts that objects can only be seen when illuminated.
  • 1-PS4-3: Investigate the effects of placing different materials in a beam of light to test their properties (e.g., transparent, translucent, opaque).
  • 1-PS4-4: Use tools and materials to design a device that uses light or sound to communicate over a distance.
