Merge Earth science and engineering as the entire class designs structures ready to withstand natural disasters!

Encourage students to express their creativity and explore critical thinking as they learn about the engineering design process during Earth science lesson plans. Ready-to-implement program includes curriculum and materials for up to 30 students to complete 12 lessons. They will collaborate on natural disaster projects using objects like marshmallows, lava rock, and modeling clay to create structures and see if they can withstand earthquakes, landslides, flooding, or a tornado. They also need to be ready to adapt their creations on the fly to better withstand the events.

Each 1-hour lesson includes a schedule, background information, discussion topics, extension ideas, and a materials list. It is great for use in classrooms, afterschool programs, and summer camps. Store materials in the included storage tubs. Full contents list below; sand and fan not included. Accommodates 30 students. Recommended for Upper Elementary.

Standards: Aligns with NGSS, CCSS.

CHOKING HAZARD (1). Not for under 3 yrs.

Next Generation Science Standards*:

  • 3-5-ETS1-1: Define a simple design problem reflecting a need or a want that includes specified criteria for success and constraints on materials, time, or cost.
  • 3-5-ETS1-2: Generate and compare multiple possible solutions to a problem based on how well each is likely to meet the criteria and constraints of the problem.
  • 3-5-ETS1-3: Plan and carry out fair tests in which variables are controlled and failure points are considered to identify aspects of a model or prototype that can be improved.
  • 4-ESS3-2: Generate and compare multiple solutions to reduce the impacts of natural Earth processes on humans.
  • MS-ESS2-5: Collect data to provide evidence for how the motions and complex interactions of air masses result in changes in weather conditions.
