Build a winch system and discover how to use it to decrease the amount of work needed to lift items.

Discuss and define the Engineering Design Process as students build a winch system that can lift an object. Set parameters such as limiting the materials used, the winch must lift a bucket at least 3", or design a system to pull a car students create. Allow groups time to brainstorm and sketch their design. Once approved, encourage students to be resourceful and use only the supplies they need such as wooden dowels, string, buckets, and tape. Through these engineering activities, they learn about the benefits of simple and compound machines. They also discover how changing variables affects the amount of force on the object. Challenge students to take the experiment further by using different items or assign costs to building resources. Set includes everything needed to build a winch plus lesson direction. The included lesson direction details setup instructions, activities by grade level, learning objectives, and teaching suggestions to expand lessons. Full contents list below. Recommended for Upper Elementary and up.
