Design and build a sundial to track the sun's movement!

Introduce students to a different way to tell time as they learn how to build a sundial in small groups and test it for accuracy. They begin by writing the number 12 on the edge of a paper plate and attach it to cardboard for stability. Next, poke a hole through the center of the plate and insert a straw. When noon arrives, place the sundial outdoors so the shadow from the straw aligns with the number 12. Take additional measurements throughout the afternoon to see how the angle of the Sun changes. You can also conduct the sundial experiment indoors using your own flashlights and moving them right to left to represent the Sun. Students can move the flashlight up and down to see how latitude impacts the shadow. Set includes enough supplies for up to 24 students. Full contents list below. Recommended for Elementary and up.

The included lesson direction details setup instructions, activities by grade level, learning objectives, and teaching suggestions to expand lessons.
