InclineInvestigation Inclined Plane Kit
From the scaffolding used to build ancient Egyptian pyramids to modern parking ramps and staircases, inclined planes have been used for thousands of years to make it easier to move heavy objects to higher or lower surfaces. In this kit, students conduct hands-on physics experiments to discover why inclined planes are important simple machines commonly used in modern engineering and design.
Start by setting up the 46"L x 30"W frame and ramp in an open area to engage small groups in a kinesthetic STEM experience as they physically conduct trials and analyze results. Vertically lift a bucket of weighted beanbags using a spring scale to determine the force required, then pull that bucket up the ramp and compare the force readings. As knowledge increases, adjust the grade of the ramp among three positions using pushpins on uprights to discover the trade-off between required force and distance traveled. Older students can also diagram the direction of forces at play, calculate net force, work, and more.
Included lesson direction is adaptable for grades K-4 and 5-8 and details setup instructions, activities by grade level, learning objectives, and teaching suggestions to expand lessons. Recommended for Elementary and up.
