Blood Typing ABO & Rh Kit
The Blood Typing ABO & Rh Kit introduces students to the science of blood groups through hands-on experimentation. They perform real ABO and Rh blood typing tests, allowing them to discover their own blood type while learning the biology behind blood compatibility. This engaging lab investigation connects human biology, genetics, and healthcare science in a memorable learning experience.
Explore the Science of Blood Typing
Students investigate how blood types are determined by identifying ABO and Rh factors through visible agglutination reactions. Using specialized antisera, learners observe how antibodies interact with blood samples to produce clumping reactions that reveal blood type.
Perform Real Laboratory Testing Methods
This activity allows students to compare multiple laboratory techniques used in clinical settings. Students perform direct ABO and Rh typing using Hema-Tags, compare the slide method for ABO typing, and examine Rh typing using the slide test method. They also explore the test tube method for ABO typing, helping students understand how different laboratory procedures produce diagnostic results.
Think Like a Medical Lab Professional
During the investigation, students take on the role of laboratory technicians as they collect data, interpret results, and record findings. The experience introduces healthcare career pathways such as medical laboratory technician, physician, geneticist, and clinical laboratory scientist.
Permanent Record of Results
Blood typing is performed on self-adhesive Hema-Tags, allowing students to keep a permanent record of their blood type. Observing agglutination reactions firsthand helps students clearly understand how blood typing works in medical settings such as blood banks and hospitals.
Classroom-Ready Lab Investigation
This kit includes antisera needed to demonstrate real ABO and Rh blood typing reactions along with an enhanced instructor manual. The manual provides background information, reproducible student worksheets, and answer keys to support classroom instruction. Materials are sufficient for up to 50 tests, and antisera should be refrigerated to extend shelf life. Accommodates 25 students. Recommended for High School and up.
Standards: Aligns with NGSS.
