Ocean Trash Can Kit
Budding oceanographers investigate the effects of pollutants on the ocean, its inhabitants, and the coastline surrounding it!
From trash cluttering the sea floor to chemical runoff affecting the pH levels of water, the effects of pollution in the ocean can have widespread effects on fish and plant life. Using a variety of topics and activities, students recreate real-world effects of ocean pollution with models. They analyze and divide pollutants into 5 categories including debris, toxins, nutrients, particulate, and oil. After identifying the cause, students study the effects of pH levels, dilution, acid rain, water self-purification, and oil spill cleanup. From cotton balls and plastic bags to tums and pH strips, this kit contains enough materials for up to 24 students. Six 1-gallon milk containers required, not included. Recommended for Upper Elementary and up.
